Director Zack Snyder teases the existence of Supergirl in the extended DC universe - but will the Easter eggs in Man of Steel ever be developed?

Director Zack Snyder teased the Supergirl version of DC Extended Universe during a Man of Steel surveillance party.  Supergirl is more famous than ever, thanks in large part to the superb portrayal of Melissa Benoist in The CW's Arrowverse TV show.  But it was actually installed in the films themselves, at the very beginning of the DCEU.

When he created Man of Steel, Snyder had little idea that he would become the foundation of the whole, unofficially titled DCEU.  However, the visionary director is known for playing the long game, and as a result, he deliberately planted many Easter eggs that could be developed into suites.  Snyder recently hosted a Man of Steel watch party, where he spoke at length about some of these Easter eggs.

In a key scene from Man of Steel, Clark Kent discovers a Kryptonian spacecraft that crashed about 20,000 years ago.  As Snyder pointed out, upon close examination, there is an open pod in the background, suggesting that one of these former Kryptonians has survived.  Kryptonians are essentially immortal on Earth, one of the many beneficial side effects of our sun's radiation, which means that this survivor would still be there.  Although Snyder did not explicitly mention Supergirl, he noted that it was all by design, and advised viewers to "stay tuned".  Later in a fan Q&A, Snyder added that he had always intended to expand the universe and introduce more Superfamilies.  He didn't have a solid Supergirl argument, but he expressed how much he would like to see the Girl of Steel brought to the big screen.

In fact, the story of the Kryptonian explorers - and, in fact, the DCEU Supergirl - was told in an official cartoon of Man of Steel.  The story was written by Snyder, screenwriter David Goyer and then CCO Geoff Johns of DC Entertainment.  He introduced Kara as a member of the Explorers Guild who lived at a time when Krypton was expanding across the universe, eager to increase its sphere of influence.  Kara was the commander of the ship that was sent to Earth, but unfortunately a mutiny caused the ship to crash, and Kara was the only survivor.  Snyder's comment fits perfectly with the comics and suggests that his version of Supergirl would have been very different from his incarnation Arrowverse.  On the one hand, Kara would have chosen to hide its existence for hundreds of thousands of years, without even intervening when the Kryptonian forces threatened the globe in Man of Steel.  There is no way to imagine the character of Benoist looking aside like that.

Snyder may have told viewers to "stay tuned", but the sad truth is that it has probably been forgotten.  He is no longer involved in defining the future direction of the DCEU, and Warner Bros. probably won't be interested in tying a minor Easter egg and a prequel comic that most people will have forgotten.
