Suicide Squad director David Ayer explains a scene from the Suicide Squad trailer, with Katana, which was not selected for the final cut.

David Ayer, director of Suicide Squad, explains a scene from the movie trailer that was cut from the theatrical version of the movie released in 2016. While everyone is talking about Zack Snyder's Justice League, it's easy to  'forget that writer / director David Ayer also struggled to make Suicide Squad.  Released in the wake of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad had an infamous production schedule and a long editing process that made the final film far from Ayer's original plans for the film.

Many scenes were removed from Suicide Squad before it hit theaters, and Ayer has recorded information on the amount of content cut, particularly regarding the often-maligned version of Jared Leto on The Joker.  With Suicide Squad, the montages are particularly obvious, because the trailers of the film contain many moments that were not included in the final film, or even in Extended Cut.  Released on home video, the long version of the film only included a handful of extended sequences, barely enough to make comparisons with "Ultimate Edition" by Zack Snyder from Batman v Superman.

David Ayer recently went on Twitter to share information about the deleted scenes from the Suicide Squad theatrical release.  Asked about a moment in the trailer that shows Katana's eyes changing color, the writer / director explained the origins of the moment.  Originally, Katana's role in the final film was to be larger, the wicked Enchantress putting the samurai warrior under her control, causing her to turn against the rest of the team.

Presumably, this possession would have led to an exciting fight sequence between a brainwashed Katana and her allies.  No footage has ever been shown of this battle, but it's hard to imagine that there are no more cut sequences of high octane action sitting somewhere on a hard drive, next  scenes from the Joker and more romantic scenes between Rick Flagg and Enchantress before it turns sour.

With Zack Snyder's Justice League finally becoming a reality, the Ayer Cup from Suicide Squad seems almost inevitable at this point.  Although the director himself is not very optimistic that his version of the action movie will see the light of day, it has become a distinct possibility that these lost scenes may resurface on HBO Max at some point in the future.  Meanwhile, fans can expect several of the characters from Suicide Squad to return to James Gunn's next sequel, The Suicide Squad, as well as Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey, recently released, starring Margot Robbie  from the 2016 film.
