Netflix's popular Spanish drama, Elite, has been officially renewed for a fourth season, with the announcement of major distribution changes.  The show was created by Carlos Montero and Darío Madrona and is centered around an elite private school called Las Encinas.  At the start of season 1, Las Encinas welcomes three scholarship students after the collapse of a working class school in the city.  The first episode introduces the central mystery of the season, which is the murder of Marina, one of the students.  The show then follows two parallel timelines: the aftermath of the murder and the events leading up to it, until the identity of the murderer is finally revealed in the season finale.

Seasons 2 and 3 revolve around similar mysteries and follow the same divided timeline structure, while successfully advancing both the plot and character development.  Along with these darker themes, Elite also has a lot of sex, relationship dramas and other normal issues for teens.  The show has an extensive cast, with Itzan Escamilla, Miguel Bernardeau and Mina El Hammani, as well as Miguel Herrán and Jaime Lorente, who both play in another Netflix hit show, Money Heist (La Casa Del Papel).  Elite has been very popular with critics and fans alike, with many hoping for a fourth season.

The show's official Twitter account announced the news with a video of the season 4 cast. They share their excitement about what they read in the new scripts, saying "it's intense"  and "there are a lot of new things you could never think of."  There are a few key cast members who won't be coming back, including El Hammani, Ester Expósito, Danna Paola, Jorge López and Álvaro Rico.  The rest of the regular cast will resume their roles, and new additions will be announced later.

The upheaval of the cast isn't a huge surprise, given a handful of cast members have left the show throughout its first three seasons, with at least two main characters being killed off.  Elite's renewal comes just over two months after season 3's release on March 13, 2020. The show first premiered on Netflix on October 5, 2018, with season 2 arriving just under a year later.  With Elite gaining popularity, the third season renewal was announced in August 2019. Netflix has increasingly supported its international series and found great success, evident with other shows like Dark (Germany) and Kingdom (South Korea).

Though the end of the third season clearly said goodbye to some characters, there's still plenty to explore in season 4 with the characters still at Las Encinas.  Based on what's happened in seasons 1 through 3, the plot of season 4 will most likely revolve around a new mystery, though we will just have to wait and see what exactly that is.  Elite has continually delivered intense drama and great acting, and season 4 is sure to be just as thrilling and satisfying.
